Old People is a 2022 horror movie streaming on Netflix. It is written and directed by Andy Fetscher, starring Melika Foroutan and Stephan Hornung.

Synopsis

A woman returns to her hometown to attend her sister’s wedding. Things don’t go well, because some old men show up thirsty for blood.

Movie Review

Conceptually, the premise is full of potential. What better than to use demographers’ observations of society’s composition and take it to the extreme in the form of a horror movie.

With a good introduction, we are very quickly immersed in a dystopian time and place, and we are spared the lengthy and slow preludes waiting for the movie to get cracking.

The ambiance is set; dark and dank, in a decrepit retirement home, an assistant is murdered by one of its residents. Sweep take of the city from the building’s terrace, we see that the city is in turmoil. Apparently, the elders are rising up against the rest in society – an inter-generational conflict.

With a solid screenplay that constructs the story with coherence, and evoking sadness and suspense – we all know who will be the baddies in this story, now we simply want to know how it reached that point.

As most good horror stories it has a solid premise, and grazes the Grimm tradition, with its effective plots and telling a tale with a moral.

Our Opinion

It is gripping from the get go, relying on a traditional narrative style to pique our interest. Despite its lackluster photography, it is an interesting horror movie.
