A story of intrigues, liaisons, master plans that go awry, and the sweet art of seduction. A playful number that will keep you entertained for its entire duration.
Synopsis
In the grand duchy of Babenhausen, young Prince Lothar receives an education shielded from the evils and vulgarity of the world. However, his mother is worried because the idea of marriage is as distant to Lothar as death, and there is a danger of the dynasty becoming extinct. To address this, she assigns him the best spiritual and worldly advisor, Mr. Cazotte, a famous painter and renowned seducer, to subtly guide his steps through the courts of Europe towards the desired objective. In the court of Leuchtenstein, Lothar passionately falls in love with Princess Liudmilla, and a marriage proposal is formalized, ensuring a blissful succession to the throne. Only one thing is amiss: Liudmilla is pregnant and will give birth to the ducal heir two months earlier than what the law and decency permit. Herr Cazotte attempts to salvage the situation by proposing that the princes retreat to a charming castle, accompanied by a select and small entourage. The princess’s lady-in-waiting will be the young Ehrengard, a girl of noble lineage, strong character, and unwavering loyalty… and someone whom Cazotte has peculiar plans for. However, something goes awry, unexpected and uncontrollable events unfold, and ultimately, Ehrengard becomes a decisive figure in a story that, like the reverberation of a strange echo, rearranges itself and its protagonists time and time again.
Review
A mildly titillating and entertainingly cheeky feature that will amuse many. Sidse Babette Knudsen plays the Grand Duchess with her usual performative savoir faire. She takes on the role with naturalness that is all too convincing, the perfect cast for this role. While Mikkel Boe Fรธlsgaard gives us a great performance as the charming, and seductive, artist Mr. Cazotte.
If you are expecting Bridgerton or Dangerous Liaisons, think again. This feature film has an entire different air to it. It is light, the story is told with the usual Bille August flair that keeps us engaged at all times, as it flows having all the ingredients required, and that seem to be perfectly measured to tell a delightful story in its cinematic form.
The cinematography is commendable, with photography of the beautiful locations, be it in nature or the palaces. As for the tempo of the movie it is balanced, and will not lull any an audience member asleep.
Mention must be made to the costume and production designs, carried out by Margrethe II of Denmark, her Highness the Queen of Denmark, herself, who has a long, and remarkable trajectory in the arts. The short documentary that follows the film, chronicles the production of the feature, and invites us to see the creative process behind it. It features an interviews with Margrethe II of Denmark about her approach to the production design, as well as with Billie August, and gives us a insight into the artistic collaboration between both. We recommend this documentary short, especially if you are interested in film production.
Our Opinion
We can only recommend this movie. It works as an antidote to counter anything heavy and tiresome. With excellent performances, wonderful storytelling thanks to the direction, beautiful photography and production design, as well a playful score that is integral in setting the tone, you can expect to spend an hour an half entertained by this comedy drama. It is followed by a documentary short, which we found interesting as it gave us an insight into the production of the film.
