Goodnight Mommy (2022) is a horror film directed by Matt Sobel and starring Naomi Watts.
Good film very different from the 2014 version, more adapted to a more international audience, less suggestive, more Hollywood.
And with all this, we are grateful that they have not limited themselves to making a mere copy of the original.
Plot
Two twin brothers return home during their summer vacation to find their mother covered in bandages after cosmetic surgery, and with an unfamiliar demeanor.
Film Review
One more remake featuring more of the good Naomi Watts and one more horror (The Ring vle us for both). A film that lacks the fascination and badassery of the original, but has a few more elements to bring to the table.
Even if you’ve seen the first one, this one has its own findings and surprises. It is more Hitchcockian and less nebulous. Evidently, the plot had it made and this time we play more with the plot than with the setting and the unhealthy (the obvious plots of the 2014 one): here we dive into whether the mother is or is not the mother and we doubt with its protagonists.
We found a very suggestive game in terms of plot and script level, it is very well constructed (I would dare to say that it is better in script and even in the approach of the scenes).
It’s slow to a level that never gets tiresome, with tension very well handled. More psychological horror than gore? You will be (I don’t know if pleasantly) surprised in this regard, because it has a couple of really shocking scenes.
Very well worked suspense at all levels. It makes an impact at the level of sequences and is very well worked in all technical aspects.
We prefer not to talk about Naomi Watts: she is a great actress and never disappoints us even in bad movies. On this occasion, and again, we have another great performance in a role that, yes, will not win her an Oscar but that adds to her excellent resume.
Our opinion
We like it in many ways more than its brilliant predecessor. It is another vision of the same plot, much more realistic and less fairy tale, but also terrifying…..We like it in many ways more than its brilliant predecessor. Although let’s be honest, a little less.
