Film Review of “Rest in Peace”
“Rest in Peace” is, first and foremost, a film that rests on the foundation of a strong script determined to tell its story and, while employing many elements of a thriller, doesn’t insist on being a Hollywood-style thriller. The film expertly creates intrigue, plays the part of a suspense movie but also manages to stay within the realm of drama, allowing Joaquín Furriel to shine and letting the story rely more on the character than the suspense, though never forgetting the latter.
“Rest in Peace” also offers a snapshot of an era, a reconstruction of the ’90s in Buenos Aires, as well as what came after, but it’s not fundamentally a socio-economic movie: it’s more about family drama, personal journeys, and an inherently human story that knows how to take advantage of its strong elements and deliver a narrative that’s personal, dramatic, social without being overpowered by any genre.
Does this make “Rest in Peace” a unique film? It’s a good film, but it doesn’t leave that great story or boast that significant production for which it could be remembered. It’s a pleasant movie, suitable for a quiet afternoon, that achieves its goals without striving for high achievements, subtly slipping into our lives without making too much noise.
