Chokehold is a Turkish film for Netflix directed by Onur Saylak and starring Kivanç Tatlitug and Funda Eryigit.

From the booming Turkish film industry comes this thriller that, without making any noise, we found (at least) quite interesting.

A film with a great virtue: it knows how to carry and create its own narrative rhythm.

Movie Review

You have to get over the first few minutes, in which it seems like one of those rural dramas that apparently, go nowhere: a city couple in a rural environment where everything is elusive and they are not part of the community. Good premise, well developed in terms of images. Then something happens and the film changes, the drama takes shape and the characters, entity.

Just as we have spoken (on other occasions) about characters who are simply carried away by the plot, here it is similar, but well done and balanced. The classic scheme of an event that turns lives around is there, but as a whole everything works, and Onur Saylak knows how to give shape, constancy and narrative balance to a movie that arrives this Friday to Netflix without standing out too much, but has reasons to be, at least, an appetizing target on the streaming schedule.

A classic thriller very well filmed, carefully executed at the level of shots and of which you can tell there’s a whole intention at the visual level. Both Kivanç Tatlitug and Funda Eryigit know how to develop their characters.

Does this film manage to stay in the retina? Certainly not, but it is still a good product, this time a thriller, which moves away from what we expect (forgive the prejudices) from a Turkish film and knows how to develop what it wants with personality and taste.

An assured entertainment for lovers of good thrillers, who will find in this small sample an exoticism that, if not exquisite, is enough to keep an eye on it.
