Fair Play is a 2023 thriller film written and directed by Chloe Domont. The film stars Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan, and Rich Sommer.

“Fair Play” is a movie about ambition and how a professional relationship can affect a romantic relationship. In every place, there is an expression for this that ultimately recommends the same thing: not mixing love and work.

It’s difficult not to do so when, as in this case, both protagonists work ten hours a day and have no time for anything else but the company.

Plot

Emily and Luke are engaged, attractive, and have a promising future. There’s only one problem: they work at the same company, and company protocol doesn’t accept it. The problem arises when she gets promoted and he slowly starts losing his position in the complex corporate organization.

Review of “Fair Play”

“Fair Play” is a more or less classic thriller that, without aiming too high, provides an enjoyable time but is easily forgotten. It features good performances, a well-crafted atmosphere, and a coherent yet not brilliant script. It’s a movie where everything works, but nothing seems to want to shine, and nothing manages to make it stand out in a web-like corporate story that, if it had more impactful elements, would have been more striking as well.

It’s a movie focused more on dialogues than on situations, more on tension between the actors than on memorable sequences. It’s a more introspective and melancholic film than what a thriller seems to promise.

It effectively portrays the downfall of the couple due to circumstances and ambition, and of course, it has that always excellent third protagonist, New York, with its excessive ambition and the business world that mercilessly devours all souls with ease.

The best part of the movie is actress Phoebe Dynevor, who skillfully portrays a double-faced character, a thriller character that captivates with every gaze and deceitfully attracts us.

Our Opinion

An elegant movie that looks good but is easily forgotten due to lacking the strength of an original proposition.
