“Fingernails” is a movie directed by Christos Nikou starring Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, and Jeremy Allen White.
If you are tired of dating apps and ultra-modern compatibility tests, Apple TV+ brings us this “retro” solution in the form of a romantic comedy that is perhaps everything but a romantic comedy: a comedy about heartbreak and precisely the incompatibility with the partner we choose.
No silly laughter or hilarious scenes here: “Fingernails” is an almost bitter comedy built on prolonged silences and relationships that deep down don’t work.
And others that simply based on hopes, seem like they might.
In any case, a very different comedy with a peculiar treatment that will at least give you something to think about.
Movie Review
“Fingernails” is almost filmed as if it were an “art house” film and is based on the performances of the protagonists and above all, in showing itself to the viewer in the most natural way possible, without deceiving in a romantic comedy that ultimately plays with the deception of cinema itself and of the romantic genre, a genre that deceives us with romantic hopes and behind it all, explains this (precisely) romantic comedy.
You cannot deny that, at least, it deserves a chance. In addition to all this, it has excellent performances, especially by Jessie Buckley, who has the opportunity to create, shape, and develop a true, fleshed-out character. She shines as an actress and makes the character shine.
“Fingernails” is an urban comedy of encounters and disconnections, of dialogues but, above all, of a lot of truth in its narrative, execution, and rhythm.
A very different comedy to reconsider relationships, hopes, and why not, also who we love.
