‘How to Deal with a Heartbreak’ (original title Soltera codiciada 2) is a sequel to the 2018 romantic comedy movie ‘How To deal With A Break Up’. The film is an Argentine-Peruvian production, and is directed by Joanna Lombardi, written by María José Osorio, and stars Gisela Ponce de León, Karina Jordán and Jely Reátegui.
Synopsis
María Fe finds herself in the midst of an existential dilemma as her professional trajectory was abruptly halted by a pandemic, which compelled her to move back to her parents’ home at the age of 32. Now, under the mounting pressure from her publishing company and an impending deadline, she must rekindle her career in order to complete her second book. María Fe will confront her dilemmas in a manner befitting a prudent and mature woman: by becoming entangled with less than ideal man.
The trailer comes in Spanish, but the film has been dubbed, and quite well might I add, for its Netflix streaming.
‘How to Deal with a Heartbreak’ is a sweet feature film, that depicts the trials and tribulations of being 30+ in this day and age, seeking to build a career, have a romantic life and deal with life’s dramas (such as a parent’s death).
The tone is lighthearted, and amusing, and its characters (at least the lead and her closest) are designed to be relatable and likeable to the audience. However much I try not to think of ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary‘ and ‘Sex and the City‘, ‘How to Deal with a Heartbreak‘ takes me there. It is like a blend of the two (now “old”) movie and series set in the year 2023 – the conditions have changed quite a lot for thirty somethings since the 90’s, but the problems are close to identical. The movie’s approach to the story is similarly friendly, and all in all the dilemmas the main characters have to face run along the same lines: work, love and friendship.
The production design is appealing in its colorful take, and the photography does not let the movie down. In fact, it is good. As far as the screenplay goes, it flows, counting on fluid dialogues and lines, despite seeming slightly formulaic. An ‘audience pleaser’, in the form a film that plays it safe, and tells a story that is a old as humanity itself though set in today’s day.
If you are looking for something easy to watch, ‘How to Deal with a Heartbreak‘ might be the film for you.
