Magic Mike’s Last Dance is a movie directed by Steven Soderbergh starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek.

Good old Mike returns with his sculpted abs from the hand of the director everyone loves for this farewell, not very spectacular cinematographically, but fun and entertaining.

Storyline

Mike works as a waiter until a rich woman takes him to London to, together, form a group of male strippers.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance

Correct, very correct and knowing that there is a certain Soderbergh in charge of the project (you know, this man mounts, produces, directs, writes, makes the music …), but as not everything can be done by the good director and “one-man band”, he has his always good partners who accompany him: this time, same as always, Channing Tatum, a very good actor for comedy, and Salma Hayek, who does a bit of everything and does everything well.

In short, a film that, with the quality of talent it possesses, could not go wrong and it is about to go wrong precisely because of having it all, and Magic Mike, perhaps, did not require a third part and this third installment is somewhat forced in its conception, a “more of the same” without the same dramatic pretensions as the first and that gives itself up much more to the choreography than to the treatment of the characters that, on the other hand, few viewers (it is also true) have come to look for.

For the majority: one more chance to see these guys dance and good old Mr. Tatum show off those sculpted abs that so many admire… with Salma Hayek as a bit of a sidekick and with a film that, in the end, has little to tell in a story that was exhausted before minute one.

It labours to give us a third part, but little is left of the two previous installments, which were more “made” as films and more focused on the cinematographic.

In this one, we are left only with the anecdotal aspect of a photography signed by… guess who… Steven Soderbergh, who does everything well and keeps the studios very happy and about whom the actors speak wonders because, besides, it seems that he is a pretty smooth guy in the shootings.

Our Opinion

An unnecessary dispatch of another good display of Soderbergh’s multifaceted professionalism with good performances… and pretty much little else.

Except for what you all came to see: the dances!

Well, enjoy them, there are quite a few.

The Star: Channing Tatum

Channing Matthew Tatum is an American actor, producer, and dancer. He first gained recognition for his starring role in the 2006 dance film Step Up, which brought him commercial success. Since then, he has appeared in a variety of films and television shows, including the hit Magic Mike franchise, 21 Jump Street, Foxcatcher, and The Hateful Eight. He has also received critical recognition for his performances in such films as Sheโ€™s the Man, Dear John and Logan Lucky. In addition to acting, Tatum is also a successful producer and has founded his own production company Free Association. Throughout his career he has been nominated for several awards including a Peopleโ€™s Choice Award and Criticsโ€™ Choice Award. Outside of his professional life Tatum is known for being an avid snowboarder and philanthropist who supports various charities including St. Jude Childrenโ€™s Research Hospital.

Director

Steven Soderbergh is an American film director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer and editor. He is widely known for his groundbreaking works in the independent film movement of the 1990s and later as a pioneering filmmaker in Hollywood blockbusters such as Oceanโ€™s Eleven (2001) and its sequels. He has won multiple Academy Awards, including for Best Director for his 2000 biopic Traffic. His other notable films include Out of Sight (1998), Erin Brockovich (2000), Oceanโ€™s Thirteen (2007), The Informant! (2009), Contagion (2011) and Logan Lucky (2017).

Soderbergh began his career as an indie filmmaker when he was only 26 with the release of his 1989 debut sex, lies, and videotape. The film earned him several awards at Cannes Film Festival including the Palme dโ€™Or award for best picture. It also put him on the map in Hollywood as a โ€œgo-toโ€ director for unconventional projects. Over the next two decades, he continued to develop unique stories that explored complex themesโ€“including Che (2008), a biopic about revolutionary Ernesto โ€œCheโ€ Guevara that was split into two parts; Magic Mike (2012) which delved into the world of male strippers; and Behind the Candelabra (2013) which focused on Liberaceโ€™s secret relationship with Scott Thorson.
