Sister Death is a horror movie directed by Paco Plaza starring Aria Bedmar and Almudena Amor.
It’s not uncommon for convents, churches, and the like to have terrified us throughout the centuries. Just take a look at the baroque paintings of Caravaggio and others to realize that this “chiaroscuro” thing has a lot of potential, and the film industry couldn’t resist it.
If Hollywood brought us “The Nun,” which was more successful with the audience than with critics, now comes “Sister Death” to Netflix. It’s a calm horror movie that serves as a prequel to “Veronica.” It knows how to build up suspense and maintain it before the (expected and necessary) final explosion.
It’s also commendable in its cinematography, directing, and screenplay.
Review of “Sister Death”
Calm and composed, it takes its time for the terror to have its true effect. It’s not just a psychological horror movie (although it has those moments too) because it also has explicit scenes that sometimes remind us of Hollywood hits. However, “Sister Death” manages to establish its own style with its photography, screenplay, and editing pace.
At times, “Sister Death” comes close to Hollywood only to distance itself almost definitively, and then captivate us again. Its director, Paco Plaza, is a skilled specialist in the genre, demonstrating his mastery of editing tempo and a screenplay that, although with a clear purpose, doesn’t stifle the characters or hinder their naturalness.
It’s an ambitious film at times, especially in terms of photography and pace, but it lacks the originality that would make it a cult film in the genre (the story of the novice and the terrifying convent is already part of the collective imagination).
It sometimes stands out but also hesitates in its ambitions.
Our Opinion
A good horror film that, while not ultimately shining among others in its genre, offers enough incentives and attractions for a scary Friday night on Netflix.
