The Abandoned is a movie directed by Ying-Ting Tseng starring Janine Chang, Ethan Juan, and Yu An-Shun.
Are you in the mood for a stylish thriller with macabre crimes? “The Abandoned” is one of those movies that knows how to captivate from the opening scene and showcases a narrative intent in every frame without betraying the genre or its fans.
On New Year’s Eve, we are presented with a film that starts on that very day, with a corpse abandoned on the street and a subsequent investigation. The finger and the victim’s own heart, previously drained of blood, lead us to the next one, and from there, we delve into the story of the protagonist.
Movie Review “The Abandoned”
A film that initially holds a lot of promise and slowly loses that initial impact that says it all in terms of style. The pacing, atmosphere, characters, and cinematography all announce a top-notch aesthetic and narrative display – one of those films that are either good or very good, but gradually lose that tremendous impact over time.
In its course, it remains an interesting and original film, delving into characters and personal stories in its middle part until it has to raise the stakes in terms of rhythm and revisit those first scenes we all expect. It does it well, but without achieving that magical impact or an extravagant display of style.
However, it knows when to accelerate and drive the thriller forward, captivating the audience.
It manages to capture the essence of the story and tells it in its own unique way, with a somewhat melancholic and occasionally overly somber tone, only to pick up the pace once again to become a dark thriller of macabre crimes.
With a well-written script, compelling characters, and a well-structured thriller, combined with a realistic, gloomy, and melancholic ambiance, this film is filled with rain-soaked and dark scenes, brimming with secrets.
The cinematography is particularly captivating, especially the choice of shots.
Our Opinion
While not as mesmerizing as it promises to be, it entertains as it should. A movie that excels in its aesthetic execution.
