The Rope Curse 3 is a Taiwanese horror movie directed by Shih-Han Liao.
Today, we receive this new Netflix film that, this time delving into Taiwanese culture, continues to capitalize on the success of the first (The Rope Curse), which centered around superstitions and curses. This time, the story promises to go further, with another ghost story and the unsettling presence of spirits that will walk among humans for a week.
You can imagine some of us will be intrigued.
Plot
This is the story of a woman who committed suicide by hanging herself in front of her son. Years later, it was the man himself who did the same.
Local wisdom says that this rope should not be cut without the intervention of an expert, so that the curse of the suicide does not spread.
In this mysterious guest room building, young men are in charge of room cleaning.
And the legends soon came to life.
Movie Review: “The Rope Curse 3”
The first one was a hit, with great editing and atmosphere. Here, we have a story that repeats itself, promising to open the gates of hell during these days when ghosts will roam among the living.
It boasts a good atmosphere and, like the first film, features well-executed shots and camera movements in another well-directed movie that, however, only repeats the same arguments as its predecessor, with a similar outcome: the search for viral videos and the betrayal of ancestral traditions that, once again, unleashes evil.
“The Rope Curse 3” is a good horror film with no new ideas, but it succeeds in terms of pacing, structure, and (like the first one) editing and sound effects. It is a movie that, above all, is enjoyable for its atmosphere and is liked for its traditional elements and iconography.
It builds upon the successes of the first film (which were many) and doesn’t rely too heavily on effects, although this time it seeks more aerial shots and some fast-paced steadicam scenes.
There are more scares, perhaps too many, and more scenes that aim for direct impact: is there an excessive accumulation of shocks? Maybe there is less script preparation, less storytelling, and an excessive pursuit of “jump scares,” which actually hinders the effectiveness of some scenes.
This often happens with sequels.
And yet, it remains a good film due to its setting, editing, and the ensemble narrative that revolves around this curse of the hanged and the ancestors. It still has its impact, with well-executed sequences that don’t rely on excessive effects to achieve that sought-after impact.
Later on (we warn you), it changes, and to undo all this curse, we will go to a strange place, as promised by the film in its original language, taking us to the only place where we can put an end to these curses, a place where the doors between two worlds open.
Our Opinion
Entertaining, a good horror movie, and a worthy continuation of a franchise that, while not going down in history, has managed to stay true to its premises. In this third installment, it knows not to betray itself and give the audience what they want.
Without too many surprises.
