You Do You

You Do You (Merve Kült) is a Turkish film directed by Cemal Alpan starring Ahsen Eroğlu. With Ozan Dolunay and Zuhal Olcay.

Yes, it sounds like one of those self-help manuals that cost so little to write and provides so many benefits. You Do You is not far from this somewhat easy journey of self-discovery.

You do You is a light comedy, starring Ahsen Eroğlu in one of those films that seeks at all times to make you fall in love with a beautiful but unpretentious protagonist, with ideals but without being excessive, with longings but without being ambitious.

A romantic comedy that, almost by definition, is neither comedy itself nor romance, mixed with that genre of “self-discovery” and light comedy.

A mix of genres that works, sometimes or almost always, and that, thanks to the charm of its protagonist, to some secondary characters with an interesting story (especially the mother of the protagonist) and to taking a little too much from other successful films, manages to create a cocktail that, if not explosive, it’s very entertaining, cheerful and refreshing.

No, it doesn’t fall into drama and never leaves its lively tone.

Which is to be appreciated.

About the film

Good pace and script, and a protagonist who knows how to fit a role which, in itself, is a golden opportunity, with dialogues to show off and a personality that allows to play with nuances and, above all, to be likable and allow the audience to fall in love with them, whatever gender they belong to. Ahsen Eroğlu is the great protagonist, and she knows how own this film that, excellently supported, manages at all times to keep the tone.

You Do You is not born to be a great blockbuster or revolutionize the comedy genre, but it’s born with the best intentions to entertain us and, above all, to make us have a more than entertaining time, with reflections, but without making us fall into the transcendent, with joy but without falling into eccentric parody, with certain cinematic pretensions, but without falling into the stylistic.

It’s an intelligent, well-written comedy that works, but never wants to leave the genre of romantic comedy or self-discovery on which it is based.

With certain thematic similarities to The Devil Wears Prada, You Do You is a good product that, although “formulaic”, brings us a charming protagonist with personality, good sequences and a somewhat restrained, yet intelligent, fun.

But well,  it doesn’t take any risks at any time.
