Society Of The Snow is a movie directed by J.A. Bayona starring Enzo Vogrincic,, Agustín Pardella, and Matías Recalt among others. It is based on the book by Pablo Vierci.

J.A. Bayona brings us this well-known story, once again presented with a steady hand, great production value, and excellent direction.

Is it a bit tear-jerking? Yes, indeed.

Once again, the director showcases his versatility with different themes and his exceptional control of pace.

For the viewer: if you’re unfamiliar with the story, it is flawlessly executed; and if you already know it, it’s not a reinvention of cinema, but a highly effective film in all its cinematic aspects.

Plot

In 1972, a Uruguayan plane crashed in the Andes: 40 passengers and 5 crew members. This is the story of what happened there.

About the film

We won’t discover Juan Antonio Bayona, a director entrusted with none other than one of the Jurassic World installments. We know, it might be seen as just a blockbuster for the most intellectual critics, but if we consider it from a production standpoint: a huge responsibility due to its high budget. The whole studio would agree: this guy knows what he’s doing, able to handle the considerable sum of 100 million dollars according to his own standards.

“Society Of The Snow” is another exceptional film in terms of execution: Bayona demonstrates that he can handle it all, and does so in an exceptional manner. He manages horror, action, dinosaurs, and, in this case, a survival drama that appeals more to emotions than action, putting the characters at the forefront, while ensuring that the story never becomes boring through his camera work.

Does it achieve “Society Of The Snow,” it accomplishes it and once again demonstrates that it can do anything. However, do you feel like watching a movie about isolated people in vastness and their stories of survival? In that aspect, we’re not so sure anymore, and that’s where, from the choice of subject itself, the movie doesn’t surprise or want to or should: based on the true story of the survivors, there’s no way to make a surprising movie, but it becomes a perfect movie in terms of its intentions: it touches us when it should, and everything, in terms of rhythm, drama, and production, is flawless.

The excessive drama in some sequences: questionable, but we won’t get into that. Its treatment is perfect.

Is it going to be the movie of the year? Not at all, because it also doesn’t strive to reinvent anything in a movie that isn’t meant to reinvent a story that, on the other hand, is so heroic that it shouldn’t be reinvented.

Our Opinion

Flawless in its execution. Did we feel like watching the same story again? We’re not so sure about that.
