We are beyond excited and honored to play at the Sydney Opera House. It’s one of the most iconic venues in the world. Australia was where Khruangbin was meant to start our 2020 tour. So, to end this tour here almost two years later feels all the more celebratory.
Khruangbin
Sydney – Monday 28 March, 2022. The Sydney Opera House today announced that three-piece Texan band Khruangbin will perform in the Concert Hall on 27 November, bringing their bass-heavy sound of psychedelic grooves and surf-rock cool to the world-famous venue for the very first time. Khruangbin, which translates to airplane or “Engine Fly” in Thai, will make its thrilling and long-awaited Opera House debut on stage in the renewed Concert Hall, after the venue reopens in mid-2022 following two years of extensive upgrades.
Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall, says: “Sydney should brace itself for a hypnotic space odyssey when Khruangbin – one of the world’s most original bands – transforms the beautifully renewed Concert Hall with their mesmerising mix of funk, soul and psychedelic rock. Their unique sound, that also embraces Latin pop, jazz, Iranian music, dub reggae and touches of West African rhythm, has taken them around the world to sell-out audiences, garnered wide critical acclaim, and is about to captivate Sydney.”
The Texan trio – bassist Laura Lee, guitar wizard Mark Speer and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson – formed in Houston in 2009. Boosted by their acclaimed debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You, Khruangbin has been on countless global tours, shared stages with the likes of Father John Misty and Massive Attack, and played to sold-out crowds at nearly every major festival in the world. Scoring critical raves for their sophomore album, 2018’s Con Todo el Mundo, and 2020’s Mordechai, which featured tracks such as ‘Dern Kala’, ‘Maria También’ and ‘People Everywhere (Still Alive)’ that have become live anthems for their many fans – Khruangbin is a live force to be reckoned with. 2021’s Mordechai Remixes, their first remix album, featured re-imaginings by Kadhja Bonet, Soul Clap, Quantic, Harvey Sutherland, and more.
Sonic instrumental world-builders, Khruangbin’s sound is meticulously constructed and universally adored. Praised by The New York Times, Billboard, Los Angeles Times, FADER and more, they regularly sell-out multiple nights at iconic venues worldwide – from The Greek in Los Angeles to London’s O2 Academy Brixton – possessing a live show not to be missed.
