World Champion gymnast Simone Biles is using her platform to shine a light on the transformative impact of long-term professional mentoring. As the national ambassador for Friends of the Children, Biles is leveraging her status as the most decorated gymnast of all time to advocate for youth mentoring programs across the country.

Recently recognized as Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year, Biles attributes much of her success to the support she received from caring adults throughout her life. From her experiences in foster care to competing on the world’s biggest gymnastics stages, Biles acknowledges the crucial role that parents, coaches, and mentors have played in her journey.

The Olympic gold medalist is passionate about sharing how she could have benefited from the support provided by Friends of the Children. This innovative nonprofit organization is widely regarded as the gold standard in youth mentoring programs. Its model has significantly impacted young lives across the United States, including in Biles’ hometown of Houston, where she played a pivotal role in establishing a new chapter in 2023.

Biles expressed her enthusiasm about her Sports Illustrated recognition, stating, “One of the reasons I’m so excited to be named Sportsperson of the Year is that it recognizes not only my athletic accomplishments but also the great work of Friends of the Children and the impact we can have on the next generation of youth.”

The gymnast’s commitment to mentoring goes beyond her personal achievements. She sees herself in the children supported by Friends of the Children, having experienced foster care in her youth. Biles hopes that all children can have access to caring adult mentors for the long term, regardless of their circumstances.

As part of National Mentoring Month, Friends of the Children is receiving significant support from the advertising industry. Billups and over 20 media companies are donating advertising space to the organization, a partnership that began in 2020. Throughout January, more than 5,000 billboards featuring Friends of the Children will be displayed across 40+ cities in the United States.

Biles’ involvement with Friends of the Children underscores the importance of mentoring in shaping young lives. Her dedication to this cause demonstrates that her impact extends far beyond the gymnastics mat, inspiring a new generation to pursue their dreams with the support of caring mentors.

This story highlights the power of using one’s platform for positive change, as Biles continues to champion the cause of youth mentoring. Her efforts serve as a reminder of the lasting impact that dedicated mentors can have on the lives of young people.
