Sydney – Thursday 10 November, 2022. One Woman Show, a new subversive work of comedic theatre from Australian writer Liz Kingsman and directed by Adam Brace, will premiere at the Sydney Opera House in an Australian exclusive from 1 – 19 February, 2023.
The acclaimed show-within-a-show is a dry, irreverent parody of the genre it borrows its name from, and “a blazingly clever skewering of the clichéd narratives around women’s lives” (I newspaper, UK).
It is both written and performed by Kingsman, who grew up in Sydney and relocated to London several years ago. She has been praised for her self-aware, whip-smart and tongue-in-cheek writing and an assured, disorientating performance that leaves audiences punch-drunk with gags.
One Woman Show’s debut at the Opera House comes direct from London’s West End, and follows hugely successful, sell-out seasons at Soho Theatre London and Edinburgh Fringe, where it was nominated for the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show.
With universal five star reviews, British critics have hailed it “the greatest breakthrough show of the past 12 months” (The Times, UK) and “the single hottest ticket in the capital right now” (Time Out London, UK).
Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Performance, Ebony Bott, says: “At the Sydney Opera House, we’re always on the look-out for transformative, ground-breaking and truly relatable shows, and One Woman Show is all of that and more. Liz Kingsman offers a fresh voice as a writer and performer, and we are so thrilled to be part of her journey as she brings her show to Australian audiences for the first time. You’ll want to be able to say ‘I was there’ when she becomes a globally-revered name!”
Liz Kingsman says: “I am so excited to bring this deeply silly show to my home town and to Australian audiences for the first time – it is truly beyond my wildest dreams. I just wish I’d heard of the Sydney Opera House. But apparently it’s quite nice.”
