A Plane Seat Squabble: Ageism, Entitlement or Getting What Was Rightfully His?

A man who was about to travel all the way from New Zealand to LA with his significant other finds that an elderly couple, in their mid-seventies, had taken their seats. This man had paid extra to reserve places that offered extra legroom during the 12-hour flight. However, as he was getting his message across, he still got “some stink eyes from other people on the flight.”

We’ve all been there: keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll be getting a decent flight seat. Especially considering the fact that certain airlines take space-saving to the extreme, barely leaving enough legroom for the regular human, never mind if someone’s above-average height or weight.

This is why many passengers who want to guarantee a comfortable flight, (like this man who is 6’3) resort to paying additional fees, if they prefer to travel in that little extra comfort. And it’s particularly true for long-haul flights! Plus, if you can’t afford the extortionate price tag for a first-class seat, the next best thing is paying for that extra breathing room.

What’s more, if you’re on a tight budget, and love a little risk taking, why not play at an online casino? Apart from taking the edge off the stress of booking travel arrangements, you may very well earn yourself a bit of extra money to pay for the much-needed leg space. Surprisingly, there are quite a few good providers offering instant play no deposit bonuses. Earning a quick buck has never been so easy and fun!

Easy and fun, however, is definitely not synonymous with the experience of this man and his dear one, who almost had to beg to claim their premium economy seats which had cost them an extra $60 (£50).

The Details Of The Heated Squabble

The man shared his situation on Reddit where he recounted how he found this elderly couple seated right where his name was displayed on an electronic panel. At first, he gave the elderly couple the benefit of the doubt and started by politely asking them whether they got confused with their seat numbers.

It soon became clear that there wasn’t any confusion whatsoever, as the couple asked the man and his significant other to take their seats instead, which had no extra legroom.

“You want me to sit in your seats?” the man asked them.

“Yes, that would be nice, thank you,” the elderly couple replied.

The man then demanded that they return to their own seats as he has ‘paid extra’ for the legroom. Still, they insisted that their seats are “not that bad, there’s plenty of legroom”.

The man became irritable at this point: “Yeah, there’s plenty of legroom in my seats because I paid for it,” and then resorted to offering them help in moving their bag if they needed it.

In the meantime, a queue had developed along the aisle and people were staring at the man.

A flight attendant then stepped in and asked the elderly couple to go to their original seats. It was at this point that the couple requested an upgrade. However, they were informed that the airplane was at maximum capacity.

Users’ Comments On Reddit

On Reddit, users had a lot to say about this heated squabble. One person couldn’t understand how the other people who had paid extra for legroom, like this man, were actually glaring at him.

Another one justified the man’s insistence based on the long duration of the flight:

“This isn’t a two-hour flight where you buck up for the good of old people, which is still not right given the social experience that is flying – I wouldn’t care if it was a two-hour flight there is still the principle of the matter, but I may cave depending on my mood.”

And then they added: “12-13 hours is no joke though – there is no giving in. You move those people or the plane doesn’t take off!”
