DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is ten part series that reconstructs the story about the Milwaukee serial killer. It stars Evan Peters, whom we know from American Horror Story. And guess who is behind the production of this series: Ian Brennan and a well known creator of horror shows who goes by the name of Ryan Murphy.
This series is interesting (to put it lightly), very disturbing and dark, and it is not for all audiences. Very realistic portrayal that takes us up and close to one of the most notorious serial killers in history, and gives us an insight into his background and upbringing.
Premise
The story of Jeffrey Dahmer, who between 1978 and 1991 murdered 17 people. His crimes included necrophilia and cannibalism.
About the Series
Ten episodes for fans of the more sordid storytelling and lovers of true crime. It is by no means a feel good series. There is no shying away from more grueling storytelling.
With the Ryan Murphy stamp: TV and spectacle with a fair share of chagrin, titillating to some. It leaves behind the more aesthetic stylistic tone, and we are given a new visual formula, to what Murphy normally provides. DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is closer to the musky, dark atmospherics of Se7en (1995). It has a suffocating ambiance, sad and downright terrifying from the very start. It is brutally effective.
They bet well on the lead actor, Evan Peters, who has immense talent, as he has already proven in his prior, and very diverse, roles. In this part he manages to bring forth the most perturbed in this character, and does it so convincingly that it is almost too much to bear; the character is truly repugnant and unlikable. Richard Jenkins, is as always fantastic, this time in his role as the father, whose influence on his son was not insignificant.
This is a series that manages to takes us to the most sordid confines, and it dives into the non-fantastical and cruelest horror.
It is a disturbing series, as was intended, it is definitely not for the faint at heart.
Our Opinion
Only for those who want a brutally tough portrait of the crimes, and the narrative of his upbringing. It is well produced, so do not expect a viewing experience that will leave you indifferent.
