Indian Predator: The Diary of a Serial Killer (2022)

This part in the Indian Predator series comes in three episodes, and is a full account of the sleuthing that led-up to the arrest alleged serial killer Raja Kolander, accused of 13 murders and cannibalistic practices.

About the Series

Think back to Truman Capote and his novel In Cold Blood, first published in 1966. It chronicled a murder in detail, without casting judgements, as it was not meant to be sensationalist writing. It was a well-written account of events, relaying with excellent prose the sequence of events, step by step. It became a bestseller.

This marked, in a way, the start of the modern true crime genre (recounting stories of this kind is a centuries old tradition, the earliest recorded narrative dates back to the Ming Dynasty).

Diary of a Serial Killer is inspired by this take on the genre, but in no way is it cold and distanced in its way of recounting the events. It is slightly more subtle than other true crime series or documentaries, with its reflective pauses between interviews, and a more subdued, though still ominous, score in the background.

It leans heavily on the interviews of the police inspectors that were involved in the case, as they recount in quite a lot of detail the process of tracking-down the killer.

It does of course use archive footage, although not in excess. Being relatively well produced, and having a good narrative tempo, it manages to weave the plot in a way that will grab the interest of the (most curious) viewers.

Indian Predator is the true crime series that was premiered on Netflix last month with the episode Indian Predator: The Butcher of Delhi , the horrifying account of Chandrakant Jha’s multiple murders.
