Man on Pause – Review: A Sincerely Funny Comedy of Midlife Errors

Man on Pause is a comedy series on Netflix directed by Durul Taylan and Yagmur Taylan.

Are you in the mood for a lighthearted comedy of errors? Man on Pause might be what you are looking for. It is a funny story with a stupendous characterization by Engin Günaydin of a man in the midst of a quintessential midlife crisis.

Premise

Amid the onset of andropause, a 50-something family man becomes obsessed with change and decides to pursue happiness. It won’t be a pretty process.

Review

Leaving aside subtleties and pretensions we can say that this series is light (as in relaxed), entertaining, endearing, sentimental…and, very funny. It is a comedy that relegates its inspiration to one character, Jusuf, who in turn also happens to be inspired to bravely take on that “difficult” stage in life, and is brilliantly brought to life with the impeccable performance by Engin Günaydin.

As far as the screenplay is concerned, it is well constructed, and flows with the ease. It is a comedy of errors that is sincere in its intention of depicting the “good old” andropause, removing the severity of that topic, with some sentimentality but not in excess.

Our Opinion

It is a funny, without being absurd, series. The performance of Engin Günaydin in the role as Jusuf is brilliant. The script has comedic and ingenious dialogue, some but not much slapstick, and a high relatability factor.
