Chapter Review – Milkmaids
After the last episode, Drive, this was a “refreshing” change in scenery. Taking place during the 18th century smallpox epidemic, the characters speaking a sort of middle English, and made us think, “Cool, Sleepy Hollow“. There was promise, initially.
Filmed in a muted hues, the scenography sets the somber mood of the story. There are a few scenes of gore and grossness that made us screech, but out of sheer disgust, not in suspense nor surprise.
The story is protracted, which can be considered quite a feat given that we are dealing with 47 minute show. There are plenty of characters, and it does allow for a relatively deep portrayal these, but it does not engage us enough. One interesting detail though, is the mix-max of referencing to mythologies; how they relate to each other in the actual legends, I know not, but O.K.
Ultimately, Milkmaids is very slow, and this episode seems to last longer than the actual duration of this installment….
Our Opinion
It is slow, somber, lacks the scare factor, recurring to a few gross effects that are just that, gross. In any case, it is better than the previous episode, or chapter.
