A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” is a Netflix mystery series starring Emma Myers, Zain Iqbal and Asha Banks.

“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” is one of those series specially designed to enjoy a summer of mystery in good company. A series reminiscent of those Enid Blyton books: it takes place in the summer and contains a mystery that teenagers solve.

However, this series is much more mysterious and stars an amateur detective with a strong character and more adapted to modern times: Pip Fitz-Amobi, a bright and special girl who will do everything possible to solve a crime from the past.

Plot

Andie Bell died years ago. Her boyfriend confessed to the crime, after which he committed suicide. But there is a young girl named Pip who does not believe this story and, five years later, is willing to unravel the mystery of Andie Bell’s death.

“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder”, a charming, mysterious and intricate series

“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” is one of those series that, without being brilliant, entertain during the summer time: it is funny at times, mysterious always, juvenile and has, in addition, an intricate mystery to solve. It has a good setting, one of those summer mysteries in a small town with characters who have known each other all their lives and all of them have a common past and something to hide. It has rhythm and knows how to unravel the mystery little by little.

And, above all, it has a good protagonist, Pip, played by actress Emma Myers. A character who knows how to be intelligent without being pretentious, to be intuitive and shrewd as well as funny and, moreover, to be close to the younger viewers.

Perhaps the plot is too convoluted for what we might expect from a youth series, but “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” is not quite a youth comedy either, as it has more of a mystery and character drama than a zany comedy. The mystery is taken seriously at all times, we are talking about murders and suicides, so nothing to do with a series for children.

It has a good narrative structure that alternates flashbacks with the investigation. It combines well in terms of rhythm and script structure.

It appeals to young people, but has a certain appeal for adult audiences, with a certain air of classic detective novels, closer to Agatha Christie than to Georges Simenon, yes. “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” achieves a mix between a summer mystery and a more modern mystery series in the treatment of the characters.

Our opinion

Perfect to get lost in its six chapters. A convoluted and engaging murder-mystery diversion that is quick to watch and, while it may not be the cinematic experience of your life, it knows how to reach the intended audience with intelligence, good taste and a clever plot.
