Over 135 years ago, a man brutally murdered several prostitutes. It was the beginning of the brutal modern fascination with true crime.

In the largest city in the world at the time, London, were the prosperous West End and the East End, London’s slum. There, White Chappel, a place full of women who practiced prostitution, shopkeepers, butchers and so on.

A place where the most grisly murders of the 19th century were committed and which became the first media phenomenon of a serial killer in history.

In “”Who Was Jack the Ripper?” Episode 1 of “Unsolved Mysteries”, docuseries on Netflix” we are not going to get clear answers about the events, and neither in the case of Jack the Ripper, but we do have access to expert testimonies with surprising data about the alleged letters that Jack the Ripper wrote to the press: Scotland Yard received hundreds, thousands of letters, and only some were taken as true.

Once Jack the Ripper’s first letter to the press was published, writing to newspapers on behalf of Jack the Ripper became, they say, something of a national pastime. “Who Was Jack the Ripper?” questions the veracity of the evidence and the half-kidney that the killer himself sent to the press.

It is also speculated that the letters were an invention of the press to sell more copies.

Thus, “Who Was Jack the Ripper?” analyzes what we all already know, describing the murders and mutilations of the victims of the most famous killer in history.

As for the identity of the killer, as you know, it remains a mystery, and the documentary returns us to the best known suspects and, due to the lack of blood tests at the time or DNA, the mystery remains unsolved.

That said, “Who Was Jack the Ripper?” is brutally entertaining and creepy, picking up on all the mythology of the first serial killer in history to be reported in the press.
