The Tailor is a series created by Cem Karci starring Çagatay Ulusoy. With Sifanur Gül and Olgun Simsek.
The Tailor is a Turkish series loaded with a plethora of varied feelings.
Don’t be fooled by its luxurious beginning, after only ten minutes the series turns to Turkish traditionalism and rural atmosphere.
About the series
What can we say about Turkish soap operas? The first, and almost the only remarkable thing, is that they have become a surprising success thanks to a combination that, although not unique, is the closest to the concept of Holy Grail in the milieu of film industry: a huge audience cliff-hanged to a low-cost production.
Without rocking the boat, full of handsome actors and applying economic criteria to both the narrative and the profiles of the characters, this industry grows day by day… to the absolute astonishment of specialized critics.
It could be the actors, it could be the straightforward stories or, as on this occasion, the traditionalism, and an intimate approach to the characters.
The Tailor has all the formulation of a Turkish novel and, you are warned, it doesn’t go very far in technical terms. It is a production that is halfway between a 100% television product and what feels like a greater cinematographic aim, but without wanting to fully accomplish it, contenting itself with not going after any complexities at the level of script and visual structure.
On the one hand, The Taylor delivers what it promises (even if its cover suggests a certain elegance). It is a close, very human story, which at all times appeals to the emotions of the characters.
It is a family story, a story of tradition and coming-back, a story that finds in this singular narrative intrinsic to Turkish industry another new example of the melodramatic, almost pulp genre, that has been so successful and on which the industry relies.
It has a little bit of everything that fans of these productions are looking for: love, intrigue, family stories…
