Thicker Than Water (Jusqu’ici tout va bien) is a series directed by Nawell Madani and Simon Jablonka and starring Nawell Madani and Kahina Carina.
A lot of social conflict in this French series that deals (quite a lot) with social conflict and, as a thriller, lets itself get away.
It follows in the wake of French cinema, it is not great technically, but it has many virtues in the development of the characters, which are treated with much respect in a script that respects itself and knows how to get where it wants to go.
Of course, it may be that the place where the script wants to go is not the same place that viewers who want to see a more “pure” thriller would like to see it end up.
About the Series
We did not know her, but write down her name, Nawell Madani, an actress who plays the role to perfection, who knows how to act and who upholds the drama of the series at all times.
A series that, this time, is nothing without the weight of actors who respond to the challenge and who do not just let themselves be carried away by the plot twists (classic thriller). Everything is tightly stitched together: the characters are not puppets of circumstance, a good script.
It has that great virtue of French cinema, in all its brutal and elegant sincerity, of making a thriller without falling into “wanting to be Hollywood”. It maintains its touch of truth, its terrible dose of social reality, its point of condemnation and, at the same time, it manages to be entertaining.
A film about women, about the Maghrebi community in France, about realities that are there. It tells them, without insulting, a great virtue from which some movements should learn a little.
French to the core and we love the French touch, always (or sometimes) so radical, but that knows how to find a balance between fiction (sometimes hidden) and that nouvelle vague of reality that, deep down, hides so much aesthetic strength.
Enjoy it.
