Wednesday is the new Netflix series created by Tim Burton, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. It stars Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Eight episodes of supernatural, twisted fun brought to us by the master of the caricaturesque, weird, whimsical and irresistible, Tim Burton. Oh, what a joy!

Premise

Wednesday Addams is sent to Nevermore Academy, a bizarre boarding school where she attempts to master her psychic powers, stop a monstrous killing spree of the town citizens, and solve the supernatural mystery that affected her family 25 years ago — all while navigating her new relationships.

About the Series

There seems to be no stopping Netflix from dishing out excellent coming of age comedies and dramas. Yes, Netflix is on a roll, and with ‘Wednesday’ they hit the mark yet again. With Tim Burton directing the first four episodes in this spin-off series, that takes from The Adams Family, you can look forward to a humorous story revolving around a twisted (but kind in its sense of justice) character with supernatural powers. All in a setting with the superb atmospherics, dark and carnivalesque that is so distinctive of Burton.

Jenna Ortega is wonderfully chilling in her stone cold demeanor, and the script has granted her character the best lines, but of course she is the protagonist. Catherine Zeta Jones and Luis Gúzman are good casting choices for the parts as Morticia and Gomez Addams, it is always a joy to see some our favorite celebs reappear. Ah, and Cristinia Ricci, what a wonderful homage to the 1991 movie adaptation.

There are plenty of references to other great fantasy and horror features. Among them, you will see Harry Potter’s doppelgänger, Gollum’s eyes in a larger than life monster, and a preciously bloody scene inspired in the horror movie classic ‘Carrie’. The occasional tilt of the hat to other greats in the genre?

Other Reviews

“It succeeds very well at pushing the story into something a little more grown-up, and a little more supernatural, but never loses sight of the heart, humor, and kooky horror that have kept us all double-snapping for decades”

Arezou Amin: Collider

“Despite Ortega’s fantastic performance and Burton’s active involvement, [it] never really captures what made ‘The Addams Family’ so viscerally strange (…) It does, however, get what makes a teen Netflix show tick”
