Mystery à la Agatha Christie with comedy and, above all, a frantic pace: Netflix brings us an 8-episode series with a classic structure that, nevertheless, is anything but classic in terms of narrative: frenetic rhythm, camera twists, sparkling and witty dialogues, and at the forefront, an eccentric, highly intelligent investigator with a marked fondness for birdwatching. And, of course, human behavior.

“The Residence” is a series created by Paul William Davies and based on the book by Kate Andersen Brower. It has Shonda Rhimes as a producer, a television specialist known for turning everything she touches into an audience success.

“The Residence” is incredibly entertaining, eccentric, and knows how to give a total twist to the classic structure of the “whodunit” in the purest Agatha Christie style, taking advantage of the success of “Knives Out” to some extent. A series full of rhythm and incredibly entertaining.

The Actors

Uzo Aduba, known for her powerful performances in “Orange Is the New Black,” steps into the role of the brilliant but eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp. Aduba’s character has the mission of unraveling a murder mystery that unfolds within the walls of the White House.

The cast mixes veteran actors and new faces. Giancarlo Esposito, Randall Park, and Susan Kelechi Watson are some of the notable names joining Aduba in this high-flying drama.

And Kylie Minogue will make a cameo, adding an extra layer of star power to the already brilliant cast.

Our Opinion

If you like detective stories of discovering the culprit among many suspects (the classic whodunit), you shouldn’t miss it: it knows how to twist the classic scheme and turn the typical pause of these types of stories into a frantic tale full of effects, plot twists, camera movements, and, above all, witty dialogues that go a mile a minute.

It’s a series to catch your breath and concentrate on, because it gives no respite: it has a frenetic pace, it’s fun, electrifying, and brings a rhythmic twist to the genre.

Fun, exciting, and almost essential for viewers who love mystery stories that, skillfully combined with comedy, will very likely be Shonda Rhimes’ next success, who never ceases to surprise us.
