‘The Viewing’: Cabinet of Curiosities – Review: 70’s Psychedelia Pays the Series a Visit

The Viewing is the eighth chapter in the amazing Netflix series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. The episode is directed by Panos Cosmatos and stars Peter Weller.

Premise

A reclusive super rich character invites four accomplished professionals, an author, a psychic, an astrophysicist and a musician, to his mansion for a “singular experience.”

About this Chapter

If there is something that characterizes this episode, it is the Cosmatos stamp, that gives it a psychedelic and a bit over the top (but always controlled) touch – eccentric, personal and nontransferable, in an episode in which he takes on a deliberately bizarre aesthetic taste.

This is a chapter that takes it slowly, leaning mostly on the dialogue, boasts of its aesthetics, almost tauntingly, that are so different to that in previous episodes (barring The Outside). It stands out, and is different in the setting.

Our Opinion

Hypnotic, somewhat suspenseful and elegantly woven together in a style so characteristic of Cosmatos that it becomes a unique piece in the series.
