Netflix’s animated film “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” plunges viewers into a centuries-old conflict beneath the waves of the Continent. The feature, set between episodes 5 and 6 of the live-action series’ first season, follows Geralt of Rivia as he investigates mysterious attacks in a seaside village.

The story, based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story “A Little Sacrifice,” pits humans against merpeople in a tense standoff. Geralt, voiced by Doug Cockle, reprising his role from the video game series, must navigate these treacherous waters to prevent an all-out war.

Director Kang Hei Chul, known for his work on “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf,” helms this new addition to the expanding Witcher universe. The film’s script comes from “The Witcher” series writers Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin, with series showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich producing.

Fans of the live-action series will recognize familiar voices. Joey Batey returns as Jaskier, while Anya Chalotra reprises her role as Yennefer of Vengerberg. Newcomer Christina Wren joins the cast as Essi Daven, adding a fresh voice to the ensemble.

The animation, handled by South Korean studio Studio MIR, promises to bring the underwater world of the Continent to life with the same quality seen in their previous works, including “The Legend of Korra” and “Voltron: Legendary Defender.”

Thematically, “Sirens of the Deep” explores issues of greed and conflict between different species. As Geralt states in the teaser, “The humans aren’t looking for truth. It’s no longer about sustenance. It’s about greed.” This setup suggests a nuanced approach to the conflict, avoiding simple black-and-white morality.

The film’s placement within the Witcher timeline offers an opportunity to expand on the world-building established in the main series, potentially filling in gaps and providing context for events yet to unfold.

For those eager to dive into this new adventure, “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” is now available on Netflix.
