Based on Curtis Jobling’s “Wereworld” book series, “Wolf King” is Netflix’s new animated series that blends fantasy, medieval storytelling, and thrilling adventure.

The series follows Drew Ferran, a seemingly ordinary teenager whose life is turned upside down when he discovers he’s the last of a long line of Werewolves and the rightful (albeit reluctant) ruler. Our protagonist must reclaim the usurped and lost throne to become the legitimate King.

Director Tom Brass, known for his work on “Captive State” and “The Innocents,” brings his visual talent to “Wolf King,” creating a visually stunning world that’s both familiar and fantastical. Series writers Celia Morgan (“Eastenders”) and Andrew Burrell (“Disenchantment”) have crafted a narrative as sharp as a werewolf’s claws.

Curtis Jobling, author of the original books, has served as head writer and associate producer, ensuring the adaptation stays true to his vision. The voice cast is a who’s who of British talent, with Ceallach Spellman (“Cold Feet”) leading as Drew Ferran. He’s joined by a cast including Nina Barker-Francis (“House of the Dragon”), Kim Adis, and David Dawson (“The Last Kingdom”) as the flamboyant pirate Count Vega.

About the Series

Netflix has committed to adapting Curtis Jobling’s entire saga, which consists of six books. Thus, “Wolf King” is a kind of “Game of Thrones” that, with more adventures and a more teenage-oriented approach, revives classic medieval fantasy in the purest Tolkien style and, more recently, in the style of R.R. Martin.

However, “Wolf King” features more action, more chases, more adventure, less political intrigue, and, above all, less violence than the popular HBO series. It’s a series aimed at a younger audience, with teenage protagonists who, although well-developed and with a whole backstory, don’t aim to reach the epic heights of other series.

It’s fun, has a whole story to tell, and above all, “Wolf King” is very entertaining, although perhaps without reaching the thematic depth of other medieval fantasy series.

In any case, it’s a new addition to Netflix’s world of animation.

Enjoy it!
