An exhibition of new works by Pat Steir showcases the American artist’s ongoing experimentation with gesture, gravity, and chromatic perception. Guided by her engagement with the science of color theory, Steir pours multiple layers of flowing pigment onto her canvases. Two of the largest works are grounded in a rich and emotive red tone, which symbolizes joy and passion. The scale of these new canvases, as well as the stacking of Steir’s “waterfall” brushwork, invite the viewer’s gaze to move vertically, echoing the effect of gravity during her signature process of pouring, splashing, and brushing thin layers of paint.
