Sophie Thatcher was raised near Chicago, Illinois and attended Evanston Township High School. Coming from a Mormon family, she no longer practices the religion. She has three siblings, an older sister named Emma, and a twin sister named Ellie. Growing up, her family was musical; she sang in a church choir and her mother played piano. Her introduction to performing began as a 4-year-old, and she eventually attended a performing arts school for musical theater. Her on-camera experience eventually led her to focus more on acting than singing.

Starting out, Thatcher appeared as a guest on the police procedural show Chicago P.D. in 2016, which is part of the renowned Chicago franchise. That same year, she also showed up on Fox’s supernatural horror TV program The Exorcist, playing a younger version of Regan MacNeil.
In 2018, Thatcher made her first appearance on the silver screen in the sci-fi movie Prospect, in which she shared the screen with Pedro Pascal. The movie tells the tale of a father and daughter (represented by Jay Duplass) who set out to a foreign moon on a mission to mine valuable stones from a hazardous forest. The following year, Sophie Thatcher was cast in Noble Jones’ directorial debut, The Tomorrow Man. At the same time, she was chosen for the role of Natalie in Yellowjackets. According to Bart Nickerson, the creator of the series, they were looking for an actor who could display both a wildness and vulnerability. Even though many auditions were held in-person, Thatcher sent in a self-recorded audition tape and was chosen for the role before Juliette Lewis, who portrays the character’s adult version. The pilot episode was approved in September and filmed in Los Angeles in November 2019.
In 2020, Sophie Thatcher was featured in the streaming series When the Streetlights Go On, which was directed by Rebecca Thomas and released on Quibi on April 6th. Later in the year, there were rumors of her joining the Star Wars franchise, though her role was not specified. In December, Yellowjackets was given a series order on Showtime.
In November 2021, Yellowjackets was released to enthusiastic reactions and became the second most viewed show on Showtime, following Dexter: New Blood. Later, it was publically announced that Thatcher would be featured in The Book of Boba Fett. Her character, Drash, was the head of a team of cyborgs that served Boba Fett. Subsequently, Thatcher starred alongside Chris Messina and David Dastmalchian in the horror movie The Boogeyman, a rendition of the Stephen King story of the same name released on June 2, 2023.
Sophie Thatcher was selected to be part of a science fiction thriller called Companion in the June of 2023, with Jack Quaid and Lukas Gage. The film was helmed by Drew Hancock and produced by Zack Cregger.

In 2016, Carolyn Clifford had a role in the series Chicago P.D. with an episode titled “Knocked the Family Right Out”, and she was cast as young Regan MacNeil in two episodes of The Exorcist.
