‘Assassin’ (2023). Movie Review: A Good Premise… Wasted

Assassin is a sci-fi thriller directed by Jesse Atlas starring Bruce Willis and Dominic Purcell.

Assassin leads us, admittedly poignantly, to the terrible conclusion that a science fiction film can be anything but pedestrian.

And this one has that terrible flaw – that it contains no new ideas other than in its initial premise.

The rest, scenes strung together are more or less well done.

Film Review

It starts out from a good idea that, carried forward with absolutely no originality, limits itself to ticking off the passing minutes and burning itself up upon the assumptions of a thriller that, scene by scene, is not bad, but lacks substance when viewed as a whole.

A film that does not want to, does not know how to – or just simply fails to – stand out and make an impact, a film shot with the lightness of a professional who performs a routine, office job, almost reluctantly and waiting for a new and more interesting project.

We must insist, and repeat: a non-brilliant ending to the career of a good actor who was the most notable action movie protagonist, and who, now his illness has been made public, the studios take advantage of to release what will be his last performances, a film every two months.

This is not one of the worst, but that doesn’t make it a good movie, either.

We regret not being able to salvage it for the sake of good-guy Bruce.
