‘Flora and Son‘ is a comedy drama directed by John Carney, and starring Eve Hewson, Jack Reynor, Orén Kinlan and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
“Flora and Son” is an enjoyable comedy about parents and children that has a unique twist: the main characters are not as charming as one might expect. The child steals, the mother goes out partying, and the father is a failed musician.
Together, they try to find their place in the world through music.
Synopsis
Flora, a single mother residing in Dublin, is currently facing challenges with her estranged son Max, a defiant teenager engaged in petty theft. Upon the Gardaí’s recommendation to find Max a hobby, Flora decides to salvage an abandoned guitar from a discarded pile. With the assistance of an online guitar instructor based in Los Angeles, Flora realizes that what may be considered worthless by one individual can serve as a lifeline for another.
Review of “Flora and Son”
An Apple TV+ film where everything is about the performances. Beyond the aesthetics, social representation, and setting, the story permeates everything, and its characters are everything, even more so than the presence of its director, John Carney, who prefers to stay in the background and let his characters speak (almost like Wes Anderson).
The film focuses on the difficult relationship between a challenging mother, a challenging son, and an unsupportive father in a not-so-easy environment. All the kids want to be Trap singers, and all the mothers struggle to escape a past that holds them back. On the screen, there’s also a failed musician played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, representing the world beyond Dublin, in sunny California where everything is happiness. Or maybe not so, we’ll have to discover it on our journey.
“Flora and Son” is a journey of understanding between mother and son, a journey of maturity and acceptance of limitations. A story of learning to live, perhaps.
In a film expected to stand out for its performances, it is precisely that: Eve Hewson portraying a woman who, without seeking luck, seeks it at thirty years old; Orén Kinlan seizing the opportunity to shine as a protagonist; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, always reliable in his versatility.
Our Opinion
Delightful, a film to immerse oneself in the characters and let them engage us with all their imperfections within their simplicity.
