Broad Peak is a 2022, Polish movie directed by Leszek Dawid, starring Ireneusz Czop, Dawid Ogrodnik and Maja Ostaszewska. This story is inspired by real-life events.
Premise
Maciej Berbeka climbed Broad Peak (8,051 meters; 26,414 ft) in 1988. However when he returned to Poland, it was uncovered that the climber had not quite made it to the summit of the mountain.
Review
It is an interesting movie, however when compared to other movies with a similar theme, Broad Peak might seem misleading. Had it been the first movie of its kind, it would probably be considered groundbreaking and what have you. But, that is not the case. Rather than providing the viewer with thrill, it is gives us a chronicle of the sequence of events in this story. Then again, this is a drama, that also tells the emotional roller-coaster the protagonist and his family went through once it was found out he had been lied to, and not reached the top of the mountain. Ireneusz Czop takes on the role as Maciej, and does so convincingly.
The first half of the movie takes us through the ascent of Broad Peak, with scenes and sequences of snow, mountain, frozen beards, and actually, very good photography. That should not be denied this movie. The takes in the mountain range are good.
Our Opinion
The movie tells a dramatic and interesting story. A bit heavy at times, it is well produced, with good takes and scenes, especially those on the mountain range, and manages to portray the characters’ emotional journeys following what was a big blow to their egos; with the convincing performances, particularly by Ireneusz Czop and Maja Ostaszewska.
