Cici is a drama movie written and directed by Berkun Oya, starring Fatih Artman.
A story of family trauma that is diluted into a two hour feature, when it could have been done in less.
Premise
A family migrates to the city after a tragic loss. Thirty years on the son is now a movie director and sets out to recount his childhood in rural Turkey, bringing an entire film crew to his childhood home, reliving past traumas and paving the way for old secrets to emerge.
Movie Review
Cici is the Turkish term for pretty or nice, which is a bit misleading when it comes to this feature film. This is a long slow-burn drama/melodrama. A long dip in the pool of melancholy, regret, and nostalgia.
The performances, though, are very good, and it does have good cinematographic moments. The latter is probably the strongest element in the movie. The cinematographer knows his/her lighting.
We do get a glimpse of the beautiful countryside, and introduced to the melodic folk music. However, neither require that we be marinated in slow motion sentimentality.
Our Opinion
Too long a feature that should have condensed its dragged out story telling. It does though, showcase the industry’s cinematographic prowess, true, with very good photography.

This movie is excellent, it reminds me of Andrei Tarkovsky’s movies – slow, little dialog, looks like nothing is happening while it’s happening. This is not for everybody, especially for people with only one point of view, and that’s Hollywood style entertainment where you cannot be bored, soul and the search for meaning are not compatible with modern life.Too bad!
The movie has great story, beautiful cinematography and very powerful moments. You just have watch and enjoy without looking at the clock.
