Do Revenge – Movie Review

Do Revenge

Do Revenge is a high school comedy starring Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke. It is written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, so we can expect a comedy with amusing twists and turns and of biting humor.

Premise

Drea the queen bee at an exclusive high school, is humiliated, supposedly by a Bitchasaurus Rex classmate, hence losing that status she had reached and spent a life pining for. Has everything has gone down the drain now for Drea? No. She befriends Eleanor, the newbie, bee or wasp?….

Review

Drea has spent seventeen years “meticulously curating this life” of status, her aim is to go to Yale… Sound familiar? Are we about to watch something similar to the Honor Society? In a way we are, although the style is different. The high school cattiness theme has since times immemorial given way to good teen movies, this is no exception.

Do Revenge is funny, ironic and sharp, and it does not shy away from taking weird turns that make it all the more amusing (hint: Celebrity Skin plays in the background in the scene Drea and Eleanor plan their revenge).

Wonderfully written, we get Drea’s hilarious insights and observations, as she introduces us to the school, the various characters in the school alumni, and her own situation – her voice-off narration works well to keep the tempo up. There is not a boring moment in this movie.

A great appearance made by Sarah Michelle Gellar, as the headmistress, is a definite plus. She is after all an 00’s teen icon. Now, a grown unimpressed woman wisely counseling Drea on how to cope with her high school hardships. She plays the part with a certain ironic distance that makes it all the more entertaining.

Well directed, written and filmed, it is a definite Netflix success. Full of pretty colors and pristine glossy photography so characteristic of a Hollywood teen movie, add the good dialogue, the twists and turns in the storyline (Hitchcockian), and you have a hit amongst teens and YA’s, maybe even their parents too, because it is truly entertaining.
