‘Don’t Worry Darling’ – Movie Review: An Aesthetically Accomplished Cinematic Feat

Don’t Worry Darling is a 2022 movie directed by Olivia Wilde starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles.

Premise

Alice and Jack are lucky to be living in the idealized community of Victory, the experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret Victory Project and their families. But when cracks in their idyllic life begin to appear, exposing flashes of something much more sinister lurking beneath the attractive façade, Alice can’t help questioning exactly what they’re doing in Victory, and why.

Movie Review

From the very start of the movie one cannot but look and admire each take, and sequence, and especially the carefully crafted technical aspects. There are movies that carry a similar theme (I can think of one starring Nicole Kidman), but in this feature film, Olivia Wilde goes beyond and elevates it further turning it into a visual experience.

Be warned: the reviews have not been as good as should be, and we do understand it. Not everybody will agree with the critiques or the vision Olivia Wilde is conveying. The discourse will not sit well with everybody, nor does it intend to, and in fact it wants to pour some salt on the wound precisely with an idea that, although already treated in film, aims to give it another angle (we will not give it away).

Peculiar and different, it has the particularity of being able to be singular, without being novel and original in the premise, and it does so thanks to its aesthetics and own voice.

The performances might not be as brilliant as one might have hoped, perhaps the choice of theme and the development of the story might not please all. Be that as it may, we think this is one of the best movies of 2022, with an impressive treatment of color, takes and ambiance. It was a pure aesthetic experience.
