Good Grief is a film written, directed and starring Dan Levy. With Ruth Negga, Himesh Patel and Luke Evans.
“Good Grief” is one of those smart movies for sophisticated, modern, and complex-free people… but it’s a story that goes beyond the surface and, this time, delves into interesting characters with a story to tell.
However, the story confesses unabashedly: it’s not cheerful at all.
Plot
Marc must face the pain of loss and a life organized around his husband. Throughout the process, and with the help of his two friends, he will try to rebuild his life and rediscover his identity beyond the relationship.
About the movie
Well-made, with a great script, good character development, and excellent work from a team centered around its lead, Dan Levy, who writes, directs, and stars in this sensitive film that has an excellent virtue: it’s very well-written and knows how to perfectly balance comedy and drama, blending them and, at the same time, going slightly beyond the established to create a different whole in the cinematic world.
An aesthetically pleasing film, carefully crafted in its narrative, with a smooth pace that isn’t aggressive, with an intelligent script that takes its time to pose the big question of the movie, which is… nothing less than confronting death.
Because yes, “Good Grief” is a tragicomedy about death itself, about how to face it with humor and, at the same time, take it very seriously and continue living with that shadow above, maintaining the smile and, at the same time, that sadness that will always be there when a loved one dies.
As you read it: a very, very serious film, very well-written, that tackles with humor and pessimism at the same time that great question of every human being.
Our opinion
Intelligent, sophisticated, well-crafted, performed, and a magnificent directorial debut for Dan Levy, to whom we would ask one thing for his second feature film: a less gloomy approach.
