Ijogbon is a Netflix movie directed by Kunle Afolayan. It tells the story of four teenagers from a remote village who stumble upon a pouch of diamonds. Their decision to keep the diamonds leads to a series of perilous events, putting one of them in serious trouble. The film stars Ruby Akubueze, Yemi Solade, and Bimbo Manuel.
“Ijogbon” is a Nigerian exposé film that gives us a glimpse into the country’s societal and political issues. Without delving into said social or political themes, given that that is not the purpose of this magazine, the film manages to make the most of what it has, and relies on convincing characterizations, and who are the element, counting on a good script, that carries the film.
It is an intelligent film that effectively conveys its message through a well-constructed and clever script.
Film Review
Direct and impactful: a true exposé film that does not seek stylistic paths, artistic or aesthetic depths. Here, what matters is the story, the social portrait, and the denunciation through characters that represent corruption and ambition, and without subtleties explain the situation to us.
This film leans more towards the human aspect rather than the abstract: in “Ijogbon,” everything revolves around corruption and ambition, as the three kids embark on a journey having to navigate this environment they are in, which is well defined through the story.
But beyond the obvious, the film also tells the story of these children who learn to live with difficulties, face them, and see the unkind and unwelcoming world of adults that awaits them.
It is not an especially harsh or overwhelming film; rather, it is a film that plays (and knows how to play) with the sensitivity and emotions of the viewer to immerse them in its plot.
Pleasant, welcoming, but also bittersweet.
Our Opinion
A film that skillfully tells this coming-of-age journey in an sensible and tender manner, and achieves its objectives through an intelligent script, despite not shining in terms of cinematography.
