One Ranger (2023)

One Ranger is a film written and directed by Jesse V. Johnson starring Thomas Jane and Dominique Tipper. With John Malkovich, who is the great attraction to watch this thriller of (international) cultures encountered.

A b-movie whose great success in finding back the essence of the genre.

Without this being necessarily attractive for the viewer.

One Ranger (2023)

Do you feel like reliving the times when video stores were the keepers of magnificent secrets? Yes, they once guard them and we all discovered a culture and, Tarantino included in the pack, we became kind of “cultured” by renting movies that, although entertaining, were not going anywhere.

One Ranger is situated in this genre, in that of an inconsequential thriller film that, however, knows how to make a tribute to b-movie thrillers and gives us one nod after the other.

Jesse V. Johnson knows what he has and how to use it, and that the only way to get out of this adventure is to do something different that attracts attention in that “other” way. He has his star, who will serve as a lure to sell the movie and he has an (inconsequential) story with which to play a Mcguffin and give us a story about intrahistory and a very Tarantino-like homage to b-movies.

It is full of bets that must be read more in the tone of the metalanguage than in that of the story it wants to tell us. The film revolves more around the irony of cinema than around the idea of giving us a formal story and sketching some real characters: the director and screenwriter know and want to fall into a cliché and go for a style that, if not as original as Tarantino’s or some of the like, does find its language, different but with many influences.

If you want to see it to pass the time, it can also be seen as those movies that, deep down, are born with the stigma of not likely being remembered in the future.

This one, at least, has an aesthetic proposal and many nods to offer us.

It is not great, but it has style and intention.

Enjoyable in its fair (and ironic) measure.
