Orlando is a 1992 film written and directed by Sally Potter. Starring Tilda Swinton

Orlando is a Sally Potter film. It was nominated for two Academy Awards(Best Costume and Best Art Direction) and, to this day, it continues to be a true delight on a visual level.

The Plot

Orlando is an immortal being who has changed sex through the centuries.

The movie. Review

Elegant and fascinating in its plot, yes, but much more at the cinematographic level, which surprises in its staging and in the wonderful scenic choreography that it offers before our eyes. Being a historical movie, it manages itself in the paradox of the universal to break with time (it is all her intention) and with the rules, sometimes even of the cinema. Taking the classic as a reference, the director enters the ground of the avant-garde as our beloved Virginia Woolf (The Waves) already did in the novel.

At an aesthetic level (especially), the film is a true delight for the senses, as well as being told with rhythm and neatness as well as daring. It has a brilliant choreography and an artistic direction that will not leave us indifferent although, of course, this is not Die Hard (it’s an irony, of course) and wants to get away from the shackles of what is stipulated at all times.

On the other hand, it is a clear feminist plea and a search for identity through gender and, in some way, its denial and mockery of all the inherent conventionalism regarding the subject.

Our Rating

A movie that we do not give five stars, but four, which is very, very good, especially on an aesthetic level.

A delight for the senses and a fine treatise on irony.
