Raymond & Ray is a dramedy starring Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor. It is written and directed by Rodrigo García.

Premise

Half brothers Raymond and Ray reunite when their estranged father dies—and discover that his final wish was for them to dig his grave. Together, they process who they’ve become as men, both because of their father and in spite of him.

Movie Review

This is a movie that counts on two great actors, who depend on (for production reasons) a minor technical issue (forgive the irony) called a screenplay, and on another that builds the latter, the dialogue, which unfortunately, does not work, at least in our humble opinion.

Is its a bitter comedy? Yes, it is, though it is far from being as funny as The Apartment, given that it lags in comedic swirls, it is somewhat rigid, and the scenarios are unconvincing, however good the performers are..

‘Raymond & Ray’ sets off from a good premise, but is lost in its development, and constantly plays with the “what will happen next”, and then disappoints in the unfolding of events.

To point out something positive about this film we will say that the characters and their development are well sketched out; their identities are gradually built up, and the differences between them are clear. The characters are not badly thought out, it is the situations they find themselves in that fail to convince.

Our Opinion

A rather disappointing movie that does not add to the brilliant filmographies of these two great actors.
