See How They Run is a movie directed by Tom George, starring Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell and Adrien Brody.

Visually rich. So much so, it might be too much in one go.

Premise

It is the 1950’s in London’s West End. Plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered. When world-weary Inspector Stoppard and eager rookie Constable Stalker take on the case, the two find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theater underground, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril.

Movie Review

This is a movie that has it all, absolutely all, except for one thing (we will add some intrigue to this review): it has a spectacular production, intelligent dialogues, A list actors, impeccable costume designs, good scenography, good takes, however, strikes us as quite unsubstantial, as if everything is a bit too perfect, so prefect, in fact, that we lose some interest.

It is a parody of the cinema industry set in the theater scene, while being a parody of the theater world in portrayed in a movie – very clever. Do you consider Wes Anderson‘s movies are somewhat boring? Well, ‘See How They Run’ is of the same caliber, so it is an either or situation. Either you love the ample creativity in its aesthetics, or it will strike you as a boring movie, which deep down, is but an artifice. We do like Anderson, in the right doses though, keeping it is digestible, but when offered in big servings it can be a bit too much. This is precisely what applies to this movie, where each take constitutes an aesthetic delight of its own (sort of like a Klimt painting).

If it delights you, or if it bores you is entirely up to your mood and taste, but it cannot be denied that this film is visually impressive. In the same way that it is so well crafted on an artistic level that it is impossible not to watch, in the same way it becomes easy to forget due to its Wildean theatrical comedic tone.

The actors are phenomenal, and it seems that they are enjoying taking part in this project. It is a choral piece that is perfectly structured, and reaches its aim to give us a completely démodé portrait. It is successful with the tempo and manages to relay the cinematographic irony with its theatrical approach.

Is it a strong movie? No, it is not, nor does it pretend to be.

It is a matter of taste.
