Slumberland is a fantasy adventure movie starring Jason Momoa and Kyle Chandler. It is directed by Francis Lawrence. The story is based on the comic strip written and illustrated by Winsor McCay entitled ‘Little Nemo in Slumberland‘.
A beautifully produced movie for the entire family to enjoy.
Premise
Nemo and her father live in a lighthouse. One stormy night her father is called to see to an incident in the rough seas. Sadly, his boat capsizes and he drowns with it. Now an orphan, Nemo is sent to live in the city with her uncle. Amidst the terrible loss and trauma, she seeks comfort in her dreams where she discovers a secret map to the magical world of Slumberland. In that other world, and with the help of the eccentric outlaw, Flip, she navigates through dreams and escapes nightmares with the hope that she will be able to see her late father again.
Movie Review
Some might consider McCay’s story derivative of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Lewis Caroll), but in this contemporary film adaptation of the comic that opinion sinks down to the bottom of the relevance-scale.
‘Slumberland’ is magnificently produced, and exudes magic and adventure from the very start. The audience will be captivated by the traditional storytelling style, the excellent special effects and CGI, and the charming characters. Personally, I think Pig (the stuffed animal that comes to life) is the most adorable pet on earth.
As far as the performances are concerned, we have to mention Jason Momoa was a great choice to play the character of Flip. He is rough and quirky, and Momoa pulls off the characterization fantastically, and he shows yet again that he has a knack for comedy. Young Marlow Barkley interprets Nemo with a load of talent, without overacting, and giving her character credibility. Weruche Opia is excellent in her role as the disciplinarian Agent Green, she nails the part with humor and panache.
On to the scenography and art direction, which is out of this world (so to speak). It is rich, elaborate, colorful and heightens the atmospherics. The CGI is impressive, and creates the worlds so convincingly they are near an immersive experience.
This feature film is a marvel that will have many viewers captivated. Enjoy the adventure and magic!
