Stopmotion is a horror movie directed by Robert Morgan starring Aisling Franciosi.
“Stopmotion” is a classic horror movie built around a tired yet classic theme: madness. Visually, it’s solid, packed with innovative ideas, and skillfully blends the visual component with the engaging plot that progressively picks up pace.
While it’s not groundbreaking or going to keep you up at night with terror, it is an enjoyable watch with a psychedelic touch, reminiscent of David Lynch’s style.
Plot
A young girl lives with her mother, both of them working on an animation film. When the mother suddenly suffers a debilitating shock, the girl starts to film her own animation movie with a strange girl who writes a chilling script about an “ash man.”
About the Movie
An intriguing film that successfully maintains suspense and efficiently draws the viewer into a web of uncertainty between reality and fiction, guiding them through the intricate relationship between an artist and their art, in this case via an animated movie.
The film is visually striking, with unique angles and an outstanding performance by Aisling Franciosi. She takes us on a journey from innocence to perversion and the macabre.
“Stopmotion” excels mainly at extracting the best from what it has: With a small budget, it uses classic horror ideas and shapes them into a fable that blurs the line between reality and fiction, delivering an intimate yet powerful tale about art, fiction, and innocence.
The movie scores high on ambiance, rhythm, and sound design. It knows when to throw in a scare without becoming just another cheap horror flick.
Our Opinion
A well-executed horror film that, in the hands of others, could have ended up as a clichรฉ. However, thanks to clever direction, it successfully brings out its best elements and takes us on a strange journey between innocence and the macabre.
