The Marriage App (Matrimillas) is a Netflix rom-com. It is directed by Sebastián De Caro starring Luisana Lopilato and Juan Minujín.

A rom-com that plays it safe, never really risking much, designed to entertain the genre aficionados.

Premise

Couple trouble strikes, as the frustrated couple finds hope in a watch-based app that rewards good deeds — until unhealthy obsessiveness takes over.

Movie Review

An Argentinian romantic comedy that starts precisely where rom-coms normally end, going back to its essence. Staying true to the genre’s norms it is predictable. Could it be otherwise?

Luisana Lopilato and Juan Minujín are both charming in the lead roles and know how to bring forth their respective characters that engage the viewer, will amuse rom-com aficionados and will entertain at large.

With a predictable premise, formulaic and not particularly innovative, the movie manages to navigate the story rather well, without being knee-slap laugh inducing, it is constructed to be an elegant comedy about grown-up couples, well to do, with children, good professions, and somewhat disenchanted.

It is technically well executed, without risking too much. It relies more on the characterizations and situations in the script, solidly portrayed by the actors. The performances are noteworthy.

It tackles comedy with a smile, without malice and without being twisted, while remaining intelligent – yes, there is room for such an approach in the genre. That said, ‘The Marriage App’ does not risk much either, ensuring its audience is not upset and pleasing the fans.

Our Opinion

Without too much emotional hoopla, this entertaining movie is as easily watchable as it is forgettable. Produced to entertain, it succeeds at that. the story is interesting, as they take on a hypothetical scenario – of the watch app that monitors one’s behavior towards one’s spouse – and deduce the possible implications.
