‘The Ring’ (2002) Movie Review

A remake of the Japanese movie Ringu. The Ring is directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Naomi Watts.

A very good movie. If it were the original, it would score a 10.

The Ring Plot

Two girls discover a tape that, according to urban legend, if you watch it, you die seven days later. Rachel is an investigative journalist with a strange little boy who decides to investigate this story.

We love Gore Verbinski and The Ring proves what American films are about: this picture is almost a copy of the original, barely modified and… puts its brutal production to the test. The film is better than Ringu on a technical level (obviously so) and there is only one problem: there is a previous film that is almost identical to it.

This movie is a stand-alone good movie in its own right, sure, it has better acting and has a little something special in movies: a star that is a blockbuster. The result is that this story went from being a phenomenon in video-clubs when the Japanese original became known to create a trend in Oriental horror films and breaking open the market for Asian films.

It´s a win-win.

This movie is terrifying, brutal and I saw it with my sister in the movies and I still make jokes about “the girl in the well”. In that famous scene, I turned around and saw the faces of the people in the audience: they were terrified: hoping she would never get out of there…

This is a little, the magic of movies: this film has a truly terrifying scene.

It has tensión, well directed and even better acting in it.

Our Opinion

Just one fault. Otherwise: brilliant.

Our Opinion

Terryfing. One of the best remakes I’ve ever seen. But it’s a remake.

Director

Gore Verbinski

Gore Verbinski, one of American cinema’s most inventive directors who was a punk-rock guitarist as a teenager and had to sell his guitar to buy his first camera, is now the director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) which made the industry record for highest opening weekend of all time ($135,600,000) and grossed over $1 billion dollars worldwide.
