Extraction 2 is the sequel to the 2020 film Extraction, also directed by Sam Hargrave and starring Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake. Rudhraksh Jaiswal and Golshifteh Farahani complete the cast.
Building upon the successful elements of its predecessor, this sequel amps up the action and intensity, leaving little room for intelligence.
Plot
Tasked with rescuing a family in the clutches of a Georgian gangster, Tyler Rake infiltrates one of the world’s deadliest prisons. But when the extraction goes awry and the gangster dies in the heat of battle, his equally ruthless brother tracks down Rake and his team to Sydney for revenge.
Movie Review
If you enjoyed the first film, you’ll enjoy the second even more. But if you found the first lacking in substance, the second will seem truly ridiculous. It’s a pure action movie that follows the rules of the genre and delivers a stereotypical sequel lacking in cinematic interest, but packed with steroids and everything else that’s bad.
However, “Tyler Rake 2” does have the virtue of giving viewers exactly what they’re looking for: very cruel villains and a hero tormented by loss who comes to save everyone from injustice. There’s not an ounce of originality in this sequel, but nobody asked for it. What people did ask for, the film delivers in spades and in a notably entertaining way: a muscle-bound hero who chops wood like a music video star and plenty of action sequences.
Is it just a high-budget product? Yes, it is, but it’s also a delight for those who want nothing more than an action movie. It’s a film with the existential arguments of a video club movie but with the budget of a blockbuster that showcases a (muscular) actor in several highly entertaining and spectacularly mounted action sequences.
“Tyler Rake” aims to be a spectacle and it succeeds. It’s a product designed to attract the most purist fans of action movies and it does so with what the audience expects, delivers what it proposes and promises.
Did anyone expect a Kubrick-style experience? Nobody would be that crazy except perhaps Kubrick himself.
Fortunately for fans of pure action movies, the good director is not here to sign this film, which, while excellent in its genre, will not satisfy those looking for “that other thing” in cinema. But it has everything to charm those who seek only an excellent action movie.

Director
Sam Hargrave is an American stunt coordinator, stuntman, actor and director. He is best known for his collaborations with the Russo brothers, including being the stunt coordinator for several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The pair also wrote and produced Hargrave’s directorial debut, Extraction (2020). Hargrave also served as Second Unit Director for season two of The Mandalorian.
